I haven’t been this excited about the internet in quite some time.
My excitement started a few weeks ago when Onion Boots video “A Web Revival: the Internet didn’t die, you’re just not on it” came across my youtube feed.
Algorithms and polished social media feeds have some benefits, but the negatives have vastly outweighed the positives. The indie web (to summarize) is a movement of independant web developers or users using sites like neocities to generate their own corner of the internet. And I love it!
I have been pondering the idea of stepping away from the blocky website builders for a while. but this movement really pushed me. I purchased Jon Duckett’s book on HTML & CSS (highly recommend for anyone wanting to custom build their site) and I was able to slowly start putting stuff together.
I had a few theme ideas (a solar system with planets as buttons to open pages being the second place idea) but I eventually decided that a windows 95 themed website would fit my website best!
to date, I have created the desktop with icons, windows that pre-load on site startup (such as my Cosmic Castaway character running). I was able to integrate my wordpress blog site as a window inside Vinciware.com and I now have a neat little community board that anyone can leave a message on!
The next addition will probably be a clippy assistant window that pops up somewhere with a memo or notification! (dont worry… he wont be too annoying). and probably a net neighbor section where I can add other websites that i like.
Anyway, if this sounds exciting for you, definitely check out A Web Revival: the Internet didn’t die, you’re just not on it
